The city of York is one of England’s elegant, historic gems. Small enough to explore on foot and with impressive features such as York Minster, a strong sense of history and characteristic shopping streets, the atmosphere is utterly memorable. When you stay at a holiday park, lodge or caravan park in the Vale of York you can enjoy this cultural centre and also have the flexibility to venture in to the glorious surrounding countryside of the Vale.

The Vale of York is mostly flat with gentle slopes – a lush landscape against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales and the Hambleton Hills. The Rivers Wharf, Nidd, Swale and Ure meet in the vales and form the lovely River Ouse waterways – upon which it is possible to take a tranquil boat trip or enjoy fishing and various watersports. A trip on the North York Moors Steam Railway is a lovely way to explore the scenery, and experience the setting of the TV favourite, Heartbeat. Numerous traditional and historic market towns are scattered through the area, such as the Roman town of Aldborough and picturesque Thirsk, famous for its links with horse racing. Pontefract boasts an impressive castle, whilst the town-sized city of Ripon is famed for its stunning cathedral.

York itself is packed with fantastic city days out, all year round. The Jorvik Viking Centre is a must for the family, with life-size replicas describing life in Viking times and numerous celebratory and educational events. The York Dungeon is not or the faint hearted and the Minster and other venues offer all manner of live entertainments and shows. Surrounded by medieval walls and full of interesting historic monuments and thriving contemporary culture, there is something for everyone in this much-loved city.
