About the Area

A brief description of Nottinghamshire and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

An intriguing county, home to the legends of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire is a beautiful area with lots to see and do. Bordered to the Pennines on the west, the countryside is gentle and rolling with great potential for outdoor activity and exploring. Locations to explore include Clumber Park, a huge country park of woodlands, undulating farmland, the impressive Serpentine lake and the famous avenue of lime trees. The Rufford Abbey estate and country park is situated in Sherwood Forests, with the imposing architecture of the Abbey and some lovely landscaped surroundings.

The remaining parts of Sherwood Forest, surrounding Thoresby Hall and the village of Edwinstowe, have been open to the public as a country park since the late sixties. The Forest is a wonderful place for the family to walk and explore, and if you visit during the summer you might be lucky enough to catch the annual Robin Hood Festival – where entertainments and performances revolve around the exciting characters from the classic stories. For an urban fix, the city of Nottingham has everything to offer. A vibrant and modern city, with renowned shopping and an exciting calendar of arts events, is enriched with historical sites of interest such as the fantastic Nottingham Castle. For a unique pub lunch, head to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. The pub is positioned at the foot of the Castle Rock, and takes in the fantastic network of caves beneath as part of its interior.

In addition to the highlights of Nottingham city, take time to explore some of the delightful market towns and traditional villages in the county. For example, Worksop is a thriving market town, with lively markets three times a week. The nearby Creswell Crags Museum and Education Centre makes an interesting visit for all ages.
