About the Area

A brief description of Northumberland and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

Northumberland is a wonderfully scenic and undiscovered county, with the appeal of two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the gorgeous coast and inland in the dramatic North Pennines. Historic monuments are situated throughout the county, including the famous Alnwick Castle that stands as the Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films. Attractions on the coast include breathtaking beaches, charming towns and villages and an array of watersports activities.

Bamburgh Castle is one of Britain’s most famous, overlooking the wonderful sandy beach and offering a must-see attraction on the Northumberland coast. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is also a unique experience to behold – a haunting and stunning area of land with a bold castle, fascinating abbey ruins, an excellent visitor centre and a thriving nature reserve. Sandy stretches are on offer at Beadnell and Embleton Bay, whilst Drurudge and Cresswell offer intimate charm and interesting wildlife.

Hadrian’s Wall is one of Northumberland’s key landmarks, an ancient Roman monument that forms a pleasant family trail as you follow its path. Woodhorn visitor centre is also worth a visit, and Kielder Water and Forest Park is renowned as England’s most tranquil spot – a stunning natural playground, with cycle paths, nature trails and even pony trekking. Watersports and fishing are also on offer at Leaplish Waterside Park.

From the historic border town Berwick-upon-Tweed, to the county’s southernmost coastal town of Seaton Sluice, Northumberland has abundance of pleasant towns and villages, many with attractive churches, museums, local craft shops and tempting markets.
