About the Area

A brief description of Northern Highlands and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

Relax, revive and explore in the breathtaking Northern Highlands. Take in dramatic coastlines and intimidating cliff-tops, admire imposing mountain ranges and venture into rare, unspoilt moors and plains. Experience flora and fauna unlike anything you have seen before and imagine Scotland’s ancient history as you come across immense castle, ancient ruins and fascinating visitor centres.

These northernmost counties of the UK have their own unique landscapes, as varied as they are beautiful, and are alive with all manner of activities for honed adventurers or timid explorers. On the northern coasts of Caithness, Sutherland, Morayshire and Nairnshire enjoy the stunning scenery of the Moray Firth with its sandy beaches and nature reserves. Experience the contrasting west and east coasts of Ross-Shire, the drama of Cape Wrath, the blissful Black Isle scenery and explore everything from whiskey distilleries to historic castles to maritime history. Throughout coastal areas there are rare opportunities to take boat trips and spot bottlenose dolphins and pretty puffins.

Golf courses in the Northern Highlands are world famous, with Royal Dornoch comparable only to the renowned St Andrews course. For anglers, there are highlights at every turn and equal opportunities for beginners to try fishing on the many tranquil lochs. Outdoor pursuits include leisurely or challenging walking, mountain biking or easy cycling in peaceful glens, rock climbing and boating…this is a natural playground for active holiday-goers of all ages, and better still the unique landscapes are even breathtaking when enjoyed by car.
