About the Area

A brief description of Kirkcudbrightshire and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

Kirkcudbrightshire is the wild yet beautiful south-west corner of Scotland, with dramatic coastline, remote moors and lush forests. Impressive castles and visitor centres bring rare interest to this wonderful choice of location for a holiday park, lodge or caravan break.

The south coast of Kircudbrightshire is rugged and inspiring. Smugglers’ caves conjour up exciting images in dramatic bays such as Kircudbright, Wigtown and Auchencairn. Exhilarating cliff-top walks over look the Solway Firth and, in the distance, Cumbria and the Lake District. The village of Creetown is a renowned and picturesque spot, famous for its association with the cult film, The Wicker Man. If you are lucky enough to visit in September you might catch the annual Creetown County Music Festival. Kirkcudbright itself has a thriving arts and crafts community providing plenty of choices when choosing your souvenirs.

Inland, to the north lie the mountains of Galloway and the spectacular Galloway Forest Park – the largest in Britain. In this park, forests such as Carrick, Kirroughtree and Glentrool offer scenic trails on foot, bike or by car, blissful picnics by rivers and lochs and adventurous climbs of mountains such as The Merrick and Mullwharcher. The centre of the region offers gentler hilly countryside, rich in agriculture and dotted with varied livestock.

Attractions such as the Fleet Visitor Centre with its ancient mill, Cardonness Castle, Threave Castle and its wonderful country estate and the Clatteringshaws Forest Wildlife Centre at Castle Douglas provide a range of options for family days out.
