About the Area

A brief description of Gwynedd and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

The county of Gwynedd is in stunning surroundings on the west coast of North Wales, overlooking picturesque Anglesey and with the dramatic backdrop of the Snowdonia mountain range. Some of the UK’s most breathtaking scenery exists here – luxurious beaches, ancient monuments and a distinctive culture.

For coastal excursions you are spoilt for choice – for relaxation or outdoor activity on the Lleyn Peninsula. Aberdyfi is a colourful town gracing the bay of the Dyfi Estuary and offering a range of watersports, golf and lovely coastal walks. From the city of Bangor, wander out onto the traditional pier, admire Penrhyn Castle or venture over the Menai Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey – a unique landscape of open countryside and many breathtaking sandy beaches. Abersoch is a haven for watersports lovers and beach-goers, retaining its distinctive character in the heart of the village itself and the lively resorts of Rhyl and Prestatyn are also within easy reach.

The joy of Gwynedd is in its bold landscapes. The impressive Snowdonia National Park is a range of imposing mountains, with Mount Snowdon towering in its centre. Walkers and climbers enjoy the challenging routes, whilst those who are less active can still access the stunning scenery in high areas – by car or even on the Snowdon Mountain Railway which departs from the lakeside community of Llanberis. The Electric Mountain Visitor Centre nearby is a fascinating experience exploring the workings of a hydro power station – there is a café and crèche to make the trip as straight forward as possible for the family. Throughout the great outdoors of Snowdonia you will find wild valleys, tranquil woodland, friendly towns and villages and excellent pubs serving local produce. The lower regions of South Snowdonia offer fishing and picnicking spots surrounding lakes such as Llyn Tegid and Trawsfynydd.
