About the Area

A brief description of Dumfries-shire and what you can expect to experience in the area of your park.

Just over the border, Dumfriesshire spreads through high peaks in the Southern Uplands, to rolling countryside and gentle plains and then towards the stunning coast and the Solway Firth. Stand at Scotland’s southernmost point and breathe the sea air, or explore interesting walking terrain, varied outdoor pursuits, intriguing nature reserves, country parks, castles and visitor centres… all this in wonderful surroundings and within easy reach of your holiday park, lodge or caravan park.

Dumfries and Galloway is home to the greatest forest park in Britain, Galloway Park. This is a fantastic place for a day out, to explore, relax and picnic in astonishing natural surroundings. The Solway Firth offers unique charm as a birdwatching haunt, and the Caerlavernock and Mersehead Nature Reserves are brilliantly accessible for memorable excursions. Natural and national heritage go hand in hand, with Drumlanrig Castle boasting an impressive art collection and Thornhill Castle, still habited, representing Scottish stately living at its most impressive. The Burns Centre at Dumfries, the intriguing stories of runaway weddings at Gretna Green are insights into Scottish history and visitor attractions such as the Creetown Gem Rock Museum, the Museum of Lead Mining, and Shambellie House Museum of Costume are great fun for all ages.

Local produce and inspired arts and crafts are evident in lively towns such as Kirkcudbright, and Bladnoch Distillery, Marrbury Smokehouse and Sulwath Brewery tell the story of the county’s renowned delicacies.
