About the Area
A brief description of Yorkshire Moors & East Yorkshire Coast and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
To the north and east of the city of York lie the Yorkshire Moors, one of the world’s largest areas of moorland sprawling right across to the dramatic cliffs of the Yorkshire Coast. The wide-open landscapes offer a quite unique holiday experience for walkers. There are endless routes and remote trails including sections of the famous Coast-to-Coast path, the Lyke Wake Walk and the Cleveland Way. Surprisingly, the Yorkshire Moors National Park has more woodland than any other. In these peaceful surroundings, nature enthusiasts and bird-watchers find a haven of their own. Several newly planted forests such as Cropton and Boltby provide key locations for family recreation, cycling, nature trails and picnic spots. The overall essence of the Yorkshire Moors is firmly rooted in its settlements – traditional communities and intriguing layers of history apparent in every village, including the fictional village of ‘Aidensfield’ from the TV series, ‘Heartbeat’. The Ryedale Folk Museum is an essential day out, putting the charm and character of this region’s settlements into context.
The Yorkshire Coast is a unique holiday destination in its own right. To the north are jagged cliffs and dramatic coves, quaint fishing villages and traditional resorts such as Whitby and Scarborough and Robin Hood’s Bay. The cliffs level out to form the flatter coastal areas where you will find the smaller resorts of Skipsea and Hornsea. At the mouth of the Humber Estuary, the renowned viewpoint of Spurn Head boasts impressive sand dunes and banks and culminates in the bustling port of Kingston Upon Hull.
The Yorkshire Moors are a hive of activity for lively holidays. Numerous activity centres offering the full range of outdoor pursuits – walking, cycling, canoeing, climbing, caving, horse riding, archery and orienteering are just some of the activities on offer.
