About the Area

A brief description of Wiltshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

The Wiltshire countryside is characterised by its gaping valleys and impressive chalk hills, which make up two thirds of this rural county. Landmarked by the famous White Horse at Westbury and the mystical Stonehenge, the scenery is truly idyllic and complimented by the range of bustling communities, imposing architecture and thriving towns and cities. There are so many things to see we can only give examples here. A must is to visit Stourhead House and Garden where you will find an 18th century mansion and spectacular gardens. Salisbury Cathedral is a fine medieval structure, known as one of the most impressive cathedrals in Britain. Nearby Ancient Wilton holds many historic treasures including Wilton Abbey. Salisbury Plain is littered with historical sites, such as burial and ceremonial sites and including Stonehenge and the Avebury Stone Circles. Roman roads span throughout Wiltshire and age-old forts provide dramatic walking routes.

Walking, cycling, horse riding, boating and fishing – served by rivers, ponds and lakes, are just a few of the outdoor activitites to be found in Wiltshire. Golf is also popular, with many scenic courses. Kids will never be bored with endless nature trails and educational visits.

The centres of Swindon and Salisbury are the biggest in the county. Swindon has interesting attractions such as the Steam Railway Museum – great for all ages - and the Arts Centre with diverse shows and childrens’ events. There are numerous retail centres and plenty of buzzy restaurants and bars. Salisbury is wonderfully picturesque with the previously mentioned cathedral, the views from The Bishop’ Walk and some delicious traditional pubs. The stunningly located town of Bradford-upon-Avon, nestling in green spaces and on the banks of the River Avon is full of delightful churches, a picturesque bridge, shops and markets.
