About the Area

A brief description of Vale of York and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

The rolling, mostly flat landscapes of the Vale of York offer tranquillity, rejuvenating activities, the cultural and architectural splendour of the city of York and the bustling character of many traditional towns and villages. Bordered by the Hambleton Hills and spreading out against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales, the Vale of York is a haven of lush greenery and peaceful riversides – the area is the crux of Yorkshire’s greatest rivers, the Wharf, Nidd, Swale and Ure which converge to form the renowned and navigable waterways of the River Ouse. Throughout the countryside are dotted characteristic settlements – pretty villages and secluded farmsteads. Scattered areas of woodland and rugged pathways make for interesting walks and excellent mountain biking.

The city of York itself is uniquely attractive in architecture and intriguing in history – as well as offering the full range of city nightlife. The York Minster is a fine abbey in the city centre, home to many cultural and arts events. The medieval city walls surround the thriving mix of excellent shopping, museums, galleries, theatres and restaurants. There are numerous unique days out - the Jorvik Viking Centre is a one-off family attraction, bringing Viking history to life with life-size models and educational tours. Every year replica Viking boats take to the river and re-enactments of historical battles take place throughout the city. The York Dungeon is a creepy event, best followed by a relaxing river boat trip.
