About the Area

A brief description of Sutherland and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Sutherland shares the northernmost land of the Highands of Scotland with Caithness to the east. The sense of remote tranquillity and openness is characteristic of the area and quite unlike anywhere else in the UK. The north of Sutherland boasts impressive sea views, admired from rugged cliffs and broad moorland. Perhaps the most spectacular point is the Ben Loyal skyline, near to the western town of Tongue.

The inland north-west of the county is a wilderness dotted with small, characterful communities and dominated by the peaks of Quinag, Canisp and Suilven, which bring drama to the skyline wherever you are. These mountain ranges attract mountaineers, climbers and hikers to their challenging routes all year round. From the north coast, visitors can take once-in-a-lifetime boat trips to the UK’s highest waterfall, Eas a1 Chuil, or to the stunning and mystical Sandwood Bay. The more adventurous will head for Cape Wrath, the ultimate destination in all of the highlands and renowned for puffin spotting.

The National Nature Reserve of Loch Fleet can be found in the east of the county, with nearby Dunrobin Castle boasting imposing architecture and lovely gardens. The Old Archaeology Trail, starting at Lairg, shows medieval remains and Bronze Age ruins. The east of Sutherland is particularly chosen by anglers and golfers, with stunning courses at coastal locations such as Dornoch – often compared to the world-renowned St Andrews. Dornoch is the county town, with an attractive cathedral and plenty of shops and restaurants. Within the vicinity, why not watch or even take part in the traditional Highland Games – feats of strength including ‘throwing the hammer’ or the ‘tug-o-war’ – just one part of the rich Scottish culture inherent in this Highlands county.
