About the Area

A brief description of Stirlingshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Stirlingshire lies in the Southern Highlands, with Perth to the north east, the centres of Stirling and Falkirk in the centre and the major cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow located to the south west and south east. The county offers every style of holiday to include blissful scenery, urban culture, historic intrigue and a wealth of outdoor activities. The main countryside appeal of the county lies within the great outdoors of the heather-clad Trussocks and the blissfully spacious mountain ranges of Breadalbane. The Trussocks are a collection of peaks and valleys, lochs and rivers, providing a stunning playground for walkers, canoeists, golfers and nature-lovers. Aberfoyle, positioned on the River Forth, has a fabulous golf course and leads you into the area and towards the beautiful banks of Loch Lomond. The largest of the many villages is the traditionally hospitable Callander, with ancient architecture, peaceful meadows and many walking routes nearby.

Breadalbane ventures further into the Highlands, with the dominating presence of Ben Lawers and the imposing Ben More, which looms over the village of Crianlarich – inviting hikers and mountaineers. This village boasts an interesting folklore centre and the starting point of the West Highland Way. Nearby Loch Tay is a haven for Salmon fishing in a lovely setting.

The city of Stirling lies in the lower lands to the east, often presented as the true Scottish city. The Old Town takes you through layers of national heritage, the inspiring Stirling Castle and Cambuskenneth Abbey conjure up images of the past, the thriving contemporary culture of the city provides endless entertainment and surrounding areas are overflowing with historic sites and outdoor activities – including several highly acclaimed golf courses. Further along the Firth of Forth is Falkirk, similarly popular and overflowing with attractions, excellent shopping and bustling markets.
