About the Area

A brief description of South West Scotland and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Within easy reach and offering its own variety of stunning landscapes and coastal activity, world-class golf and outdoor pursuits as well as an intriguing history of Scotland’s heroes – Robert Burns, Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, South West Scotland is a thriving holiday destination for all tastes. The terrain spans hills and plains, many heritage sites and stretches seawards to the south westerly tip of the famous Mull of Kintyre.

Dumfries and Galloway, renowned for artistic inspiration, ancient ruins and impressive historic architecture, lies above the western border with England. Miles of cliff paths, beaches and coves make up the coastal fringes. Glorious countryside walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits include the renowned Southern Upland Way, with its western starting point at the cliff-top village of Portpatrick. Wide-ranging outdoor pursuits include golf, fishing, mountain biking and much, much more. Don’t miss the Caerlaverock Castle and National Nature Reserve.

With its dramatic seascapes over the Firth of Clyde, hearty coastal walks and beautiful beaches, Ayrshire and its 80 miles of southern coast is an enlightening location. It is even possible to hop on a ferry to beautiful Arran, which can be reached in under an hour. This wonderful escape is said to offer all the best parts of Scottish countryside ‘in miniature’. Onland, pass by the Scottish Maritime Museum, Culzean Castle and its spectacular Country Park, the intriguing Burns Museum and plenty of characteristic towns and villages. World-class golf courses such as Prestwick and Royal Troon are rivalled only by St Andrews. The port town of Ayr, just south of Prestwick, is well worth a visit for its picturesque port, absorbing history and popular racecourse.
