About the Area

A brief description of Southern Highlands and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

The wild and remote landscapes, distinct character and enticing history of the Scottish Highlands are within easier reach than you might imagine. The unique counties that make up the Southern Highlands, geographically, culturally and historically set Scotland apart from its neighbours in Britain and overseas. Spreading inland from the east-coast Firth of Forth, Stirlingshire combines a countryside of heather-clad peaks and troughs, lochs and rivers with coastal delights such as the bustling market town of Falkirk. Stirling is a buzzing city, with architectural highlights in the Castle and Abbeys and surrounded by fascinating visitor attractions and historical monuments.

From the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Tay, the awesome peninsula of Fife has its own take on the Scottish Highlands scenery. The key attraction here is the world-famous golf at St Andrews but don’t miss out on the impressive Forth Bridge, a gem of industrial heritage. Head inland along the Highland Boundary Fault into the county of Perthshire – a geological playground of outdoor pursuit and thriving Scottish culture. Enjoy Pitlochry whiskey, abundant fishing, angling and watersports in picturesque Tayside and brace yourself for the easily accessible yet challenging peaks of Ben Vrackie and Schiehallion. The awe-inspiring Angus Glens and the ‘Great Valley’ of Strathmore make up the enticing countryside of the county of Angus – known as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ for very good reason. Sprawling and furtile valleys, set against dramatic mountainous ranges, are home to sites such as the famous Glamis Castle and renowned for local produce such as Angus Beef. The contemporary, nearby city of Dundee and the historic coastal town of Brechin further enhance the contrasts in this distinctive county.
