About the Area

A brief description of Somerset and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Somerset is hard to summarise - combining so many unique and contrasting natural features, not to mention the sweeping coastlines, thriving local communities, traditional towns and villages and high-class local produce. For countryside pursuits and exploration, chose from the dramatic limestone crags to the north of the country, where walkers and climbers find quite unique landscapes; the untouched moor-like wetlands of the Somerset Levels in the centre; the extensive hilly ranges including the Mendip Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the gorgeous coastal footpaths and cycle networks.

Outdoor types will not only be spoilt by the choice of walks, climbs and cycle and horse rides. The county has a vast network of caves, underground rivers and gorges, including Wookey Hole, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Ebbor Gorge. Wookey Hole in particular is a thriving family attraction with tours, activity centres and museums. Certain networks are also popular with caving enthusiasts. If you are looking for seaside fun, head for one of the coastal resorts. Weston-super-Mare is an age-old tradition of seaside holidaymaking with activites, entertainments, shops and bars and even a Grand Pier. There are also quieter, picturesque villages and breathtaking coastal walks. Exmoor is an area of enchanting heather, rolling hills and dramatic sea cliffs, on the western border of Somerset.

The impressive and intriguing Glastonbury Abbey, home of myth and legend and the gothic Wells Cathedral are among the magical historical sites in Somerset, popular with families and visitors of all ages. Also, extend your cultural interests to one of the many museums, such as the Fleet Air Arm Museum or the museum of Somerset Rural Life.
