About the Area

A brief description of Ross-shire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

The county of Ross-Shire comprises the areas known as Wester Ross, Easter Ross and The Black Isle in the stunning Highlands of Scotland. The county includes stretches of coast on the west and east of the Highlands, with Sutherland and Caithness lying between Ross-Shire and the northernmost coast. Inland Wester Ross is widely renowned for its dramatic mountain landscapes and miles of untouched wilderness. The dramatic atmosphere is nevertheless easy to enjoy with endless opportunities for walking, cycling and scenic car tours. Cyclists particularly enjoy the beautiful routes around Glen Torridon, in the south east coastal region of the county. Also in this area are the stunning Attadale Gardens near Lochcarron.

Venturing further north you will be inspired by the Coigach peaks – easily admired by car on the roads around Ullapool. Tour one of the highest roads in the UK and enjoy almost intimidating scenery on the Bealach na Ba road, then detour to view the impressive, mile-long Corrieshalloch Gorge. There are numerous angling centres scattered throughout the area and also a stunning golf course at Gairloch, which is also a base for boat trips and whale-spotting ventures.

Heading east, the wild peninsula known as The Black Isle overlaps with Inverness-Shire, and is surrounded by the Beauly, Cromarty and Moray Firths giving the impression of an island. The famous organic Black Isle Brewery is well worth a visit, as is the Black Isle Show which takes place in August every year. Whilst flatter plains are dotted with small towns and villages, higher peaks such as Ben Wyvis and Strathconon maintain the Highlands’ mountainous character. The sharp coastline has great opportunities for dolphin spotting, boat hire and fishing and the area also has several museums.
