About the Area
A brief description of Powys and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
Powys is a mostly mountainous county of Mid Wales, with exciting landscapes and and intriguing geological variety. In the north and west of the county you will find exhilarating and wild mountain ranges. To the west, the flat river plains of the three major rivers, the River Severn, River Wye and River Usk. Move east towards the Irish coast and the scenery melts into rugged lakes, shingle cliffs and sea coves. Aside from all this, the Brecon Beacons National Parks forms the southern border, within easy travelling distance during your stay.
There are two main National Trails in Powys, the main attractions of the area. Offa’s Dyke Path comprises a 177 miles long trek, through hilly countryside and along the Montgomeryshire Canal towpath, from the English border right across Wales to the coastal resort of Prestatyn. The walk can be done in short or long sections and can keep you busy for several weeks! The recently opened Glyndwr’s Way takes hikers through moorland, gentle countryside and picturesque farming land, from Knighton on the border through 135 miles to Welshpool. Sections of these walks can form an active and breathtaking part of your holiday!
The Cambrian Mountains glow with lilac heather and offer spectacular and peaceful scenery. Intriguing hints of past settlements and an array of wildlife and rare birds are dotted across the high marshlands. Ogof Ffynnon Ddu and Dan yr Ogof form National Nature Reserves, which are home to impressive cave systems as well as abundant wildlife.
Newtown is the largest town, with plenty of shops, restaurants and family activities. There are many characterful market towns, the most renowned being Welshpool which is elevated within the Severn Valley. The town is famous for the splendid Powis Castle, horse-drawn canal boat rides and several museums.
