About the Area

A brief description of Perthshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Perthshire is where Scotland begins to spread into the Highlands, located north of Stirlingshire and south of the northernmost counties such as Aberdeenshire, Ross-Shire, Inverness-Shire and Sutherland. The area is geologically interesting in its location on the Highland Boundary Fault – the cusp between the Lowlands and Highlands of Scotland. Consequently, this varied landscape – from the backdrop of vast mountain ranges to the lush green woodlands and tranquil river valleys – brings a wide range of challenging outdoor activity, relaxing scenic routes and also a wealth of Scottish heritage. Mountains popular with walkers include Ben Vrackie just north of Pitlochry, which has a direct path to the summit, the less challenging but wonderfully scenic Schiehallion which lies almost exactly in the centre of Scotland, and the immense Ben Lawers, situated to the north of Loch Tay and one of highest peaks in the Southern Highlands.

Loch Tay is one of the many lochs and reservoirs, such as Loch Rannoch and Loch Kinnardachy, in the county’s picturesque ‘region of rivers’ – Tayside. This is a hugely popular area for angling and fishing, with numerous well-stocked waters and rivers and renowned facilities. Sea-fishing and excellent Atlantic salmon fishing from the Tay Estuary add to the appeal of this unique area. Visitor attractions in Perthshire range from the ordinary to the extraordinary – in addition to the plentiful walks and cycling routes, and 40 golf courses to choose from, you will find activities as far ranging as archery, off-road jeep driving and even gold-panning! Historical sites including immense castles and grand stately homes are just one part of the many glimpses into the intriguing history of Perthshire and Scotland. The thriving arts and crafts communities, and the delicious local produce including exclusive whiskeys, mean that there are ample opportunities to pick up a reminder of your holiday.
