About the Area
A brief description of Northumberland and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
Northumberland is undoubtedly one of Britain’s most stunning and undiscovered areas – boasting two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Every year more and more visitors are amazed by the tranquil, wild, remote and stunning landscapes, not to mention the abundance of historical intrigue and cultural character.
The breathtaking AONB coastline within Northumberland is something to behold at any time of year. Broad, golden sands are surrounded by peaceful pathways and the renowned Coast and Castles cycleway making an ideal location for coastal explorers. The county boasts dramatic beaches such as Bamburgh, with its imposing Dunes and impressive Bamburgh Castle positioned nearby, Beadnell and Embleton Bay with their extensive sandy stretches and Cresswell and Drurudge Bay with their secluded charm and lively wildlife. Craster is a typical example of the many quaint county villages, coastal and inland, where locals and visitors enjoy the famously good fresh kippers.
The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural beauty also overlaps Northumberland, the northernmost part of the backbone of England and comprising some of the best-loved countryside in the UK – miles of gently rolling heather moorland, enticing woodland and gaping valleys.
Key landmarks include the ancient Roman monument of Hadrian’s Wall. The visitor centre of Woodhorn, a huge site bringing the history of the county to life, is a wonderful day out for the family. The ‘most tranquil spot in England’ can be found in the Kielder Water and Forest Park –with endless nature trails, clearly marked cycle paths and horse rides for the more adventurous. At Leaplish Waterside Park there are opportunities for a range of water sports and fishing.
Shops, quality foods and local character can be enjoyed in the historic towns of Berwick Upon Tweed, Morpeth, Alnwick and Hexham.
