About the Area
A brief description of Northern Highlands and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
The wild, beautiful, remote and enticing Northern Highlands of Scotland offer a haven for walkers, scenic tourists and wildlife enthusiasts and are the proud home of some incredible historic and prehistoric heritage.
For those in need of the ultimate ‘escape’, the northernmost counties of Sutherland (west) and Caithness (east) will provide just that, together with the drama of the northern coast and fascinating nature reserves. The ‘worlds apart’ atmosphere here is quite unlike anywhere else in the UK. Sutherland offers outstanding boat trips from the northern coast, whilst the rest of the county is set against the imposing backdrop of the Quinag, Suilven and Canisp peaks.
North-east Aberdeenshire offers its own breathtaking landscapes thanks to the dominating presence of the Cairngorms. The coastal fringes have well maintained paths, all manner of beaches and great opportunities for fishing and angling. The county also boasts more historical sites of interest than any other county – these include the Royal Estate of Balmoral, the famous Dunnottar and an intriguing castle trail walk. Inverness-Shire shares the Cairngorm ranges, including the flat, moor-like plateau nestled within the peaks – eerily quiet and outstandingly scenic. Surrounding the city of Inverness there are numerous places of interest and pleasant walking routes. The Great Glen route can be walked or cycled from Inverness to Fort William, with the world-famous Loch Ness on the way.
Ross-Shire comprises the mid-range of the Highlands, stretching out to the east and west coasts. The most awe-inspiring coastal roads exist on the western coast, whilst to the east the unique peninsula of the Black Isle is a mix of looming peaks, flatter lands dotted with quaint communities, outdoor activity, coastal excursions and fishing trips.
