With the appealing southern climate and landscapes for all tastes and interests, Devon is a winning destination for families, friends and couples. The coastline has a character of its own blending lazy beaches with rugged coastal paths and coves. Smugglers’ legends bring personality to the jagged coves of Ilfracombe and Clovelly, perfect for the kids. Ilfracombe is a traditional seaside resort and becomes a hive of activity in the summer months. Watersports enthusiasts will relish the world-class waves and spacious sands of Croyde, Westward Ho! and Woolacombe, where there is ample space for family enjoyment too. Woolacombe is consistently rated as one of the best beaches in the world. All along the coastal areas are fantastic walks and picnic spots.

Traditional towns and villages are oozing with character in North Devon. The port town of Appledore and the ancient borough of Barnstaple are both unique towns full of their own historical and cultural interest. Appledore tells smugglers’ tales and conveys its history through age-old fishermen’s homes and quirky narrow streets. The commercial centre of Barnstaple retains its personality but offers an excellent array of shops and eateries, specialist local produce outlets and visitor centres. The impressive Long Bridge is a must-see.

Outdoor activities are obviously hard to pass up in North Devon, with miles of walking, cycling and mountain biking in the rolling mountains, world-renowned surfing opportunities and a range of watersports accessible from local towns and resorts on the coast. There is an excellent golf course behind Westward Ho! thought to be the oldest in the country and situated in truly rejuvinating surroundings.
