About the Area

A brief description of Isle of Skye and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

The largest island of the Inner Hebrides and renowned for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife, the Isle of Skye is a wonderful holiday retreat unique in landscape and character. The terrain on the island is a dramatic cocktail of challenging mountain ranges and enticing coastal peninsulas and bays. Mountaineers can find intriguing routes and fantastic viewpoints to suit their ability. The rugged Cuillin Hills (also known as the Black Cuillin) form the dominating mountain range on the island, including the highest peak of Sgurr Alasdair. The area offers some of the UK’s most strenuous routes and rock climbs in its higher areas. In contrast the Red Hills are lower and less rocky, but still steep in ascent. Some gentler routes offer equally fantastic scenery.

The coastal fringes present some wonderful opportunities for less challenging hikes, with ever changing, breathtaking scenery and intriguing bays and peninsulas. Duirnish comprises spectacular sandy beaches set against imposing sea cliffs. The flatter moorland areas leading up to the coast are eerie and remote, as are the central areas of the island, but still provide gentler ranges for exploring on foot. The secluded tranquillity of the island has drawn many artists and creative entrepreneurs to set up studios here, bringing character to the intimate peninsula of Waternish in particular. Varied wildlife means numerous opportunities for nature trails and bird watching. A number of companies offer scenic boat trips to other islands, or off the shore to spot dolphins and other wildlife. There is even a popular glass-bottomed boat trip, taking in seals, otters, intriguing underwater scenes and even an ancient shop wreck.

Organic produce is big on the island, and there is naturally an abundance of seafood cuisine on offer in some excellent pubs and restaurants. The shopping experience is quaint and friendly in this relatively small population – for some it is like a step back in time.
