About the Area

A brief description of Inverness-shire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Inverness-Shire, or the County of Inverness, is an area in the north/north-west of Scotland including Inverness, Badenoch and parts of Lochaber. The county also includes several islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides such as Harris, Skye, Benbecula, Barra, North and South Uist and the Small Islands such as Rockall – all with their own unique beauty and cultural character. The islands of the county offer thriving nature reserves, breathtaking scenery and a unique remoteness that is increasingly rare in our world today.

On the mainland, the Cairngorm National Park forms awe-inspiring mountain scenery and is the ideal place for mountaineering, climbing, hiking and mountain biking – all of which are well catered for through outdoor centres and specialist shops. The range includes near to 50 challenging peaks, amongst which lies the Cairngorm Plateau, an atmospheric area of rocky passes and eerie tranquility. The nearby Glenmore Forest Park offers a range of watersports, as well as attractive golf courses, cycle paths and skiing in the snow tipped ranges.

The thriving city of Inverness is surrounded by many intriguing sites, representative of the extensive historical heritage to be found throughout the county. The Culloden Battlefield forms a dramatic tourist attraction, whilst visitors admire castles such as Dalcross and the Cawdor estate. The Great Glen Cycle Route and Path form a dramatic route from Inverness to Fort William, taking you past the infamous Loch Ness. The legend of the Nessie monster, said to reside in the Ness waters, creates a hive of attraction at the museum and visitor centre. Surrounding the 24 mile long loch are numerous pathways, cycleways and even bus tours, allowing you to take it the impressive Urquhart Castle on your way. At the tip of the loch is Fort Augustus, with a stunning golf course, souvenir shops and cafes. A short detour will take you to Glen Affric, a peaceful area around the Lochs of Affric and Mullardoch.
