About the Area

A brief description of Hampshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Home of the New Forest National Park, the South Downs, numerous seaside resorts and the thriving city of Portsmouth, Hampshire has a unique combination to offer its visitors. The ancient county town of Winchester is a must-see city, attracting huge numbers to its beautiful cathedral and holding the legend of King Arthur’s round table. Portsmouth is a thriving ‘Island City’ with a bustling atmosphere and all the excitement of a modern city in a stunning location.

The New Forest offers an easily accessible paradise of guided expeditions, walks and abundant wildlife. Pubs and restaurants in the area serve up local ales and locally produced and reared food (renowned nation-wide) whilst characteristic tearooms and cafes offer enchanting cream teas. The upkeep of the New Forest is firmly traditional, managed today by the same structures as in the days of William the Conqueror and largely driven by the enthusiasm of local community. Heritage centres and archaeological museums describe the rich history of the area and make a fantastic family day out.

The Hampshire coast is not quite untouched and sprawling, but more active and interesting. The Solent is a stretch of sea to the south of Hampshire, separating the county from the Isle of Wight. It has become one of the most popular sailing areas on the British coast due to its safe waters. Portsmouth and Southampton are home to several yacht clubs, boat manufacturers, marinas and boat rental ports. The annual Festival of the Sea at Portsmouth has become a huge event, drawing a quarter of a million people in 2005 to enjoy the displays and fireworks.
