About the Area

A brief description of Gwynedd and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Gwynedd, North Wales is a county of geographical contrasts, breathtaking scenery, magical historical buildings and enticing culture. Comprising three regions, the coastal Lleyn Peninsula and the mountainous North and South regions of Snowdonia, the county has diverse landscapes and thriving communities.

On the coast, towns and villages are picturesque and atmospheric. Aberdyfi, on the Dyfi Estuary, decorates the bay with its colourful seaside homes and provides a base for all sorts of watersports excursions, nature trails and even golf in a scenic setting. The so-called Welsh Riveria of Abersoch, the traditional pier in the city of Bangor, the bustling marina of Pwllheli or the dramatic sands of Hell’s Mouth – beaches and bays for every taste.

North Snowdonia, which borders with the picturesque Anglesey, is the most dramatic region in Gwynedd, with the infamous Mount Snowdon at its centre. This is the highest mountain in England and Wales and entices many visitors to its summit – which can also be reached via the Snowdon Mountain Railway from the pretty lakeside village of Llanberis (which is also home to the famous ‘Electric Mountain’ hydro-power visitor centre). There are endless exciting expeditions to be had in this areas, with lakes, valleys, waterfalls, jagged cliffs and forests. The area is renowned amongst mountaineers and rock climbers.
