About the Area

A brief description of Gloucestershire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Home to national treasures the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean, you probably already know to expect sheer natural beauty and charm in the county of Gloucestershire. Bordering with the Welsh county of Gwent and Herefordshire to Bristol in England, the county is also fantastic for exploring further a field.

That is not to say you will need to! Starting with the Cotswold Hills, you can literally spend days driving, walking, cycling, horse-riding around this gently rolling landscape. Sunny and soothing in the summer and with a frosty beauty in the winter, it is no wonder that numerous celebrities have given up high-adrenalin city life to take up cosy residences here. Revolving around livestock and wool, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the history of the area at such attractions as the Cotswold Farm Park. Age-old houses, with preened gardens and a giving a real flavour of the past, are scattered throughout the area linked to elegant towns such as Winchcombe, Bibury and Painswick.

The prestigious cities and towns of Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cirencester, Stroud and Tewkesbury all have their own unique qualities. Cheltenham is renowned for its Regency architecture and remains undoubtebly elegant to this day. Cheltenham Races make a unique and rather sophisticated day out, and once a year a literature festival attracts writers and readers from far and wide. Gloucester, situated in the stunning Severn Valley, boasts an impressive Norman Cathedral and offers boat trips from The Docks.
