About the Area
A brief description of Edinburgh and the Borders and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
A holiday in the Scottish Borders, with the wonderfully unique city of Edinburgh to hand, will leave you breathless from exhilarating scenery, intrigued by historical events, revived through the great outdoors and buzzing from the thriving culture of one of Europe’s most popular cities.
The Scottish Borders are an area of land dividing England and Scotland – from the Solway Firth on the west coast, through hilly terrain, towns and villages, remote moorland and the backdrop of the Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills, eventually merging into flatter agricultural land to the east and to the point at which the River Tweed flows into the North Sea. At this coastline, communities thrive in pretty harbourside villages and tranquil bays. The major historic town of Coldingham is well worth a visit, for hearty coastal walks on bracing days or excellent surfing and sunbathing, in Coldingham Bay, in the warmer months. The Coldingham Abbey, Marine Reserve and several nearby museums make this a great focus for your coastal explorations. The entire county is a paradise for walkers, and cyclists too, with gentle mountain ranges and gaping valleys, picturesque riversides and peaceful moorlands. Plenty of other activities are on offer including golf, fishing and many exciting outdoor pursuits.
Edinburgh itself could fill your entire holiday. This uniquely compact city, with layer upon layer of enticing culture, haunting history and lively entertainment, is quite unlike any other city in the UK. Stroll down the Royal Mile with the sound of bagpipes echoing around you. Sip whiskey in a specialist store whilst admiring the dominating presence of the castle – situated on a rugged mound in the centre of the city and visible from all around. Take an excellent bus tour to learn about all the fascinating corners of the city, then look down on it all from the fabulous heights of Arthur’s Seat.
