About the Area

A brief description of East Sussex and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

East Sussex is a diverse but traditional, modern but historical and tranquil yet exciting area of the British south-east coast. The geography of the coast is striking and varied, contrasting the breathtaking chalk cliffs of Seven Sisters with the dramatic sandstone crags situated east of Hastings. Inland, parts of the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs lie to the south of the county, with the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty situated in the north. This mixture of woodland, wildlife, gentle slopes and patchwork fields is a haven for walkers and cyclists. The soothing lower marshlands of the Pett Levels, and the Pevensey Levels, which lie below the historical landmark of the Roman Pevensey Castle.

Many other heritage sites are widespread and varied in East Sussex, spanning over 1000 years of history - imposing castles such as Rye Castle, the fairytale castle of Bodiam with turrets and a moat, and even the ancient Hastings battlefield of 1066. Ancient stately homes, cottages and farmhouses exhibit antique furniture, art and little pieces of the past, whilst the home of famous author Rudyard Kipling shows off his manuscripts and mementos.

The urban culture of Brighton forms a holiday in itself, with some of the most vibrant nightlife in the UK and the thriving culture of art galleries, arts festivals, funky shops and quirky cafes. The quainter resorts of Eastbourne and Bexhill-on-Sea offer smaller-scale seaside delights, with bandstands, theatres and arcades all set within their Edwardian and Victorian styles. Exhilarating watersports, including surfing and windsurfing, are easily accessible in these areas.
