About the Area

A brief description of Durham and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

County Durham is home to some unique architecture, fascinating museums and visitor centres and spectacular natural surroundings for outdoor activities. Historic towns and villages, impressive ancient buildings and castles and the thriving city of Durham form just one side of this varied holiday destination – don’t forget the miles of beautiful countryside, the dramatic routes through the North Pennines and the glorious stretch of Heritage Coast. The North Pennines are the northernmost part of the Pennines, coined as the ‘Backbone of England’. Within the county is a particularly beautiful section of the Pennine Way, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The route passes through Teesdale, where the spectacular scenery of the river valley includes England’s largest waterfall – High Force. Pass through woodland, pretty riverside scenery and abundant wildlife on the Derwent Valley Railway Path. To the east, for the ultimate restorative day out enjoy the sea air and refreshing views on the rugged and varied Durham Coastal Path.

Throughout the county are historic stately homes and imposing castles. Barnard Castle with its Bowes Museum, Auckland Castle in Bishops Auckland and the impressive castle and cathedral in the city of Durham are all well worth a visit. The Beamish Museum in Stanley is an exceptional day out for all the family – an open air museum that literally re-lives life as it was in the early 17th and 18th centuries. For railway enthusiasts head for the Tanfield Railway and the ‘Locomotion’ railway museum in Shildon.

Needless to say, the city of Durham offers all the bustling entertainments of a modern city, in the atmosphere of one steeped in history. The picturesque shopping streets, the historical architecture, galleries and museums, fantastic shopping and good eating are all easily accessible.
