About the Area

A brief description of Dumfries-shire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Dumfriesshire stretches southwards from the high peaks of the Southern Uplands, to the rolling hills and flat plains and then on to the stretch of coast and the Solway Firth. A beautiful county, just over the English border, where you can ramble through hilly passes and delightful valleys, then breath the sea air at Scotland’s southernmost point. Trace the steps of key figures such as Robert Burns, and find portals to natural, industrial and cultural history at every turn.

In general the walking terrain has a spacious and open feel – interesting coastal paths with cliff top views, gaping valleys around serene lochs, the natural beauty of woodland areas and hilly passes for rambles and gentle climbs. Cycle networks wind their way throughout the countryside, including the well-trodden National Byway. As well as numerous family activity centres, the county offers some excellent river, loch and sea fishing – the coast has drawn anglers for many decades. Watersports are also easily accessible and range from raft building to windsurfing to professional yachting.

For nature-lovers, Dumfries and Galloway will exceed expectations. The biggest forest park in Britain, Galloway Forest Park, the unique bird-watching opportunities on the Solway Firth and at the Caerlaverock and Mersehead Nature Reserve are but some of the accessible features that make for failsafe family outings and one-off wildlife trails. The rich natural heritage is equalled by the huge number of interesting historical sites in Dumfries and Galloway – imposing castles such as the still-habituated Drumlanrig at Thornhill, and numerous visitor centres to suit all ages and interests. Arts, crafts and local produce will enrich your stay, with towns such as the colourful Kirkcudbright bringing a hive of creativity, and plenty of opportunity to take home souvenirs and sample local delicacies.
