About the Area

A brief description of Derbyshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Derbyshire is an exciting and diverse country where opposites attract – bustling towns nestle in wild countryside and important industrial sites sit alongside elegant eclectic arts and culture. The layers of history in the area bring a wealth of interest revolving around the natural features, rural communities, imposing architecture and industrial pioneering. Two of the UK’s most-loved areas of countryside overlap into Derbyshire, the Peak District National Park and, to the north, the breathtaking Pennines. The Peak District is a treasure trove of scenery - the bold Derbyshire Dales and Valleys, wildlife-infused woodlands, exciting rock faces and rolling hills and lowlands. Walking in the Pennines will reveal some of the counties best viewpoints, an area that traditionally attracts hikers of all abilities from near and far.

Stately homes and castles in the area include Tissington Hall which dates back to 1609, Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle, Chatsworth House and Gardens and Elvaston Castle which has a country park, museum, attractions and activities. The city of Derby has plenty to offer: visit the Cathedral and Abbey, sample the shops and enjoy a wide range of entertainment and nightlife. Places of interest and kids’ attractions are open all year round and the city hosts a number of arts and musical festivals. Second to Derby in size is Chesterfield, a historic market town home of Britain’s largest open air market and England’s oldest pub, The Royal Oak.

In its central England location, Derbyshire is a wonderful choice for a quick getaway or a proper exploration.
