About the Area

A brief description of Cardiganshire and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Also known as Caredigion, Cardiganshire is one of the most distinctive counties in Mid Wales. The rich Welsh culture, dramatic countryside and fabulous coast make this one of the most visited UK holiday areas. Coastal locations include the striking Aberaeron, where the lively harbour is popular for sailing, and cyclists flock to the cyclepath leading from the port to the Llanerchaeron National Trust Property in the Aeron Valley. Spot dolphins and take part in watersports at New Quay, stroll on the sandy beach at Aberporth and cycle from the bay, take probably the most renowned view in Wales at Llangrannog. The National Nature Reserves at Borth are intriguing and the traditional Welsh coastal village of Tresaith offers a picture-postcard scene and sandy beach, with a coastal path leading back to Aberporth.

Inland, The Cambrian Mountains dominate the landscape, with the gaping valley of Devil’s Bridge forming a spectacular area with famous features such as three bridges, the Vale of Rheidol steam railway and breathtaking waterfalls. Facilities for cyclists are particularly good in Cardiganshire / Ceredigion. Wales Cycle Break Centres in the Aberaeron / New Quay area, Cardigan Bay and Lamapeter / Tregaron offer fantastic planned and signposted routes, many of which pass by historical landmarks and key attractions.

The main town, in the south of the county is Cardigan, which offers activity and entertainment all year round with visitor centres and more. The Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation is naturally picturesque and varied, and coastal walks around the area are just gorgeous. Llandysul is a paradise for anglers and folk music fans – with an excellent Angling Association and a popular annual folk festival.
