About the Area

A brief description of Argyll and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.

Heading west from the major city of Glasgow and overlapping with Stirlingshire’s stunning National Park Areas of Loch Lomond and The Trussocks, Argyll is a distinct county blessed with dramatic scenery and potent historical intrigue. This is the birthplace of the Scottish nation and of the Gaelic tongue, with heritage sites such as Dunnadd Fort in the Glen of Kilmartin giving an absorbing glimpse into the past.

Kilmartin Glen itself demonstrates the spread of natural beauty in Argyll, punctuated with fascinating archaeology and imposing castles, stately homes and ruins. The great outdoors brings many unique sites for walking, climbing, mountain biking and more. Argyll sits in the path of the West Highland Way, winding its way from Glasgow to the mighty Ben Nevis. Glencoe forms some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK, with challenging climbs, tranquil waters, rugged paths and gentle ambles. The intimidating height of the Aonach Eagach – a threatening ridge spanning three peaks – is one of the best known challenges in the area bordering the northern range of Glencoe. The Arrochar Alps are similarly exhilarating, including the daunting munro of Beinn Arthur.

Sailing is acclaimed and popular on many of the county’s lochs, and also off the Atlantic coast, with a number of national sailing events taking place each year. The coast brings its own excitement, with sailing excursions galore and a wealth of sea-fishing in the northern areas. The famous Mull of Kintyre, a sprawling peninsula to the far south west of Scotland, towards the Isle of Bute, and tipped by a historic lighthouse. Argyll and the Isle of Bute host over 30 golf courses, set in unique surroundings and crowned by the world-class course at nearby Loch Lomond.
