About the Area
A brief description of Angus and what you can expect to experience on your holiday.
Lying south of Aberdeenshire, Angus is sometimes known as the ‘gateway to the highlands‘. This wonderfully varied holiday location proudly boasts the five Angus Glens, nestling withing dramatic mountains, in the west and north of the county. In general the Angus Glens are untouched and peaceful, each of the areas being unique and enchanting in its own way. Glenisla has a backdrop of heather-clad hills and is a broad expanse rich in agriculture. The more intimate Glen Prosen has several monuments of interest positioned along pleasant walks. Glen Cova has a picturesque nature reserve and lovely riverside picnic locations, whilst Glen Lethnot is far more bleak and remote-feeling. At the foot of the Grampian Mountains, Glen Esk is a rich haven of country estates and game sports, with plenty of pleasant walking routes and scenic spots.
Travelling east, the landscape melts into the ‘Great Valley’ of Strathmore, lying between the Grampians to the north and the Sidlaw Hills to the south. The pretty village of Glamis lies in the valley, with the habited Glamis Castle (open to the public) and intriguing folk museum. Strathmore is famous for locally produced fruit and vegetables and Angus Beef.
Venturing towards the sea, you will encounter gentler, rolling countryside edging up to the coast and the city of Dundee. Although not strictly within Angus County, the city of Dundee offers a vast range of entertainments and contemporary culture to contrast the wild surroundings. The coastal town of Brechin is a fascinating day out, with a famous Round Tower, Castle and Cathedral. The Caledonian Steam Railway also runs from Brechin to the town of Montrose, popular with historians and steam rail enthusiasts. sThe county of Angus plays host to several championship golf courses, in spectacular scenery and renowned as some of the best in the UK.
