In the breathtaking Northern Highlands of Scotland, Aberdeenshire is a fantastic holiday location boasting proud Scottish heritage, 208 km of stunning coastline, the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Cairngorms, and a wealth of architectural remains and remnants from the Bronze and Neolithic Ages.
As well as being home to the immense, coastal Dunnottar Castle, probably the best known in the area, Aberdeenshire proudly claims the only existing ‘Castle Trail’ for ramblers, comprising a clearly sign-posted route accessing some of the most impressive castles, ruins and stately homes in Scotland such as Craigievar, Inverurie, Haddo House and Kildrummy. Take in the splendour of Balmoral, the Scottish home to the Royal Family since 1848, in the tranquil surroundings of Lochnagar and spectacular scenery of Royal Deeside.
Aberdeenshire’s Coastal Path, the North Sea Trail is one of the best ways to enjoy the county’s breathtaking coast. A series of maintained paths take you over rugged peaks and passed enticing coves. A mixture of wide golden sands and shingle beaches cater for wildlife enthusiasts, watersports fans and exploring hikers. A large proportion have easy access by coastal path and many have car-parking on site. A particularly impressive example is the award-winning Balmedie Beach and Country Park, in the Formartine area- an easily accessible expanse of sand with peaceful coastal paths, excellent facilities and family entertainments. As a striking contrast, Collieston Beach combines sandy stretches, jagged cliffs and bays and the beautiful Forvie National Nature Reserve set in dramatic sand dunes.
Anglers and fishermen from far and wide visit the lochs and rivers of Aberdeenshire to take advantage of the excellent salmon and trout fishing in the area, a great activity for all the family and well catered for at activity centres.
