About the Area

A brief description of Yorkshire Waterways and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

The Yorkshire Waterways network is unique in many ways – the breathtaking backdrop of the Pennines, the numerous key sites of industrial heritage, the surprisingly tranquil stretches in between lively towns and cities, and also some interesting and challenging navigations for those who chose longer routes.

Our starting point on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the longest in Northern England, offers a versatile base for a varied route through the varied Yorkshire and Pennine Waterways. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal has many interesting features, such as the Bingley Five Rise Locks – a breathtaking staircase of 5 locks that take some determination to master! This canal climbs a surprising height through the Pennines to 487 feet at its highest point – then to the west the canal winds its way down into Lancashire. Parts of the longer routes may be for the more adventurous boaters, but there is plenty to see to make it well worthwhile, including historical towns and industrial features, interspersed with open countryside stretches and peaceful stop-off points.

Heading east, past Leeds and the enticing Granary Wharf, meet the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Castleford. This stretch links the Aire and Calder Navigation to the Rochdale Canal and Huddersfield Broad Canal. Venturing west from here, the Rochdale Canal was the first route through the Pennines to be completed, and offers a scenic route to Sowerby Bridge – a hive of interesting riverside architecture, including old mill buildings dating back to the industrial foundations of the area. The route continues on to the Manchester Ship Canal and the Bridgewater Canal – a continually regenerated stretch that incorporates many heritage sites. Going south on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal you will need to be up for a challenging route, incorporating the highest stretch and longest canal tunnel in the UK.
