About the Area
A brief description of Wroxham and Horning and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.
In the north west of the Norfolk Broads, Wroxham is widely regarded as the ‘capital of the Broads’. Visitors have been taking boat trips and holidays from this pretty village and sailing on Wroxham Broad since the 1880s – and it won’t take you long to see why. Tranquil surroundings and natural beauty, yet with plenty of pubs and restaurants and friendly local stores, it is a wonderful place to begin a Norfolk Broads cruise. Across the river, Hoveton – a small village now merged into Wroxham – is equally enchanting. The Hoveton Hall Gardens are well worth a visit all year round. Heading along the River Bure, the Salhouse Broad Nature Reserve is in easy reach. Continue on past Horning and the Ranworth and Malthouse Broads to the junction with the River Thurne. A shorter cruise can take in all these delights and travel as far as Hickling on the River Thurne or north to the tranquil North Broads and Stalham on the River Ant.
Several miles east of Wroxham, Horning offers a more low-key start-point from this beautifully untouched village. You are still within easy reach of the activity surrounding the Broads capital, but if you don’t chose to head west there are plenty of sites to see on short cruises or longer ventures to the picturesque centre of Norwich, or to the coast at Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft via the River Bure, River Yare or the serene River Waveney. Remember there are no locks on the Norfolk Broads, ensuring you a relaxing and stress-free escape.
