About the Area
A brief description of Scotland Lochs and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.
Most of us associate boating holidays with miles of flat countryside, straight lines and endless horizons. For this reason many are surprised by the route of the Caledonian Canal - a masterpiece of Thomas Telford’s engineering that passes right through the Scottish Highlands. The canal is historically an important passage: from the west coast of the Scottish Highlands at Corpach, near Fort William, through the magical Great Glen lochs and east to the coast at Inverness. This miraculous pathway is a mixture of passage through man-made sections, including 22 man-made locks, and the four natural lochs in the Great Glen: Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, Loch Ness and Loch Dochfour. Needless to say, the landscape and waterway itself is wonderfully varied to create a quite unique and adventurous UK boating holiday.
The north-east tip of navigable waterway lies at Inverness, a thriving commercial centre that also retains important Scottish heritage in its many attractions. In a south easterly direction pass through Loch Dochfour and take in the impressive Aldourie and Urquhart Castles. Moving on to Loch Ness, one of Scotland’s most famous locations famed for the legend of the Nessie monster, said to reside in the loch’s incredibly deep waters. It is locations such as this that make the Caledonian Canal unique – where else can you pass from narrow canal into deep, sea-like waters steeped in history and surrounded by a backdrop of breathtaking mountains, forest trails and ancient castles?
Progress through Loch Oich to Fort Augustus, with abundant fishing sites and family-friendly facilities on the way. These areas are wonderful for leg-stretches. Across Loch Lochy, you can admire the distant peaks of Ben Tee before arriving at Fort William at the foot of the mighty Ben Nevis. Also en route, the pretty village of Banavie is the home of ‘Neptune’s Staircase’ – a spectacular staircase of 8 lochs that transfers even large, sea-fairing ships. Amazing to watch!
