About the Area

A brief description of River Thames and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

Although the River Thames has many tranquil and secluded stretches, if it is a sociable boating holiday you are after, the River Thames is your best bet. There are thriving communities, friendly lock-keepers, an excellent local around every turn and so many places to stop, explore or admire the breathtaking riverside homes of the rich and famous. Your route can combine intimate stretches, historic towns and villages, lively social networks and big-time attractions – linking Lechlade and Oxford to the west, with Windsor and Richmond to the east – all in the surroundings of beautiful Berkshire.

Starting at Radcot or Benson, cruise west to historic Lechlade, or through Oxford – an ancient city with imposing architecture, the elegance of the famous colleges and many museums, galleries and city centre entertainments. Continuing east you will encounter the peaceful waterways through the pretty village of Pangbourne – where the Adventure Dolphin centre offers a range of activities for kids - and also Wallingford and Abingdon.

At Reading, the Thames meets the River Kennet. It is possible to begin your cruise on the Kennet at Aldermaston Wharf. From this tranquil stretch you can easily venture north to Reading’s many attractions, then continue east to elegant Windsor. Runnymede Riverside Park, the renowned Windsor Castle, Thorpe Park and even Legoland are all within easy reach as well as some lovely cruising stretches. Even further east, getting closer to London, the Thames links with the River Wey at Weybridge. Again, this peaceful stretch to the south has another possible start-point. Begin your boating holiday here at Godalming and, heading north on the Wey Navigation through Guildford, find yourself within easy reach of Windsor and also Richmond.
