About the Area

A brief description of Oxford and Grand Union Canal and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

These waterways offer an endless choice of routes, taking in sections of the Grand Union Canal, Oxford Canal, River Nene, River Avon, Stratford on Avon Canal, Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, Coventry Canal and Ashby Canal. Adventurous boaters can take advantage of links to the River Thames from the southern stretch of the Grand Union and to the Trent and Mersey Canal from the northern reach of the Coventry Canal. Starting at Blisworth Arm, near Northhampton on the Grand Union Canal gives you the option of many routes in the south of the network. Perhaps travel east on the peaceful River Nene, or continue along the Grand Union Canal to join the South Oxford Canal, where you can cruise south and admire the picturesque lock ‘staircase’ of Napton Junction. Blissful countryside surrounds you as you venture further south into Oxford – an intriguing historic city with wonderful architecture and many sites to explore, as well as excellent entertainment, bars and restaurants.

The North Oxford Canal is a beautifully engineered stretch of waterway, well worth seeing. You can begin cruising here at Braunston or Rugby then meander north onto the Ashby Canal. A relaxing stretch, with no locks, is possible here. A further detour onto the Coventry Canal leads you up to the town with its impressive cathedral.

A longer holiday can cruise west to the Stratford on Avon Canal, linking to the scenic River Avon to the south – taking in Stratford on Avon and Evesham – or the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal to the north. Take time to plan your route, as there are plenty of options on the Oxford and Grand Union Canal network, for a scenic, historic and activity-filled holiday.
