About the Area

A brief description of Lllangollen Canal and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

The Llangollen Canal network, with start-points at Middlewich near to the Trent and Mersey Canal, Wolverhampton on the Shropshire Union Canal or Wrenbury, Whitchurch or Whittington on the Llangollen Canal itself, is widely recognised as the most awe-inspiring stretch of navigable waterway in the UK. Surrounded by the glorious scenery of Denbighshire, Cheshire and Shropshire, this network also boasts some impressive landmarks of waterway engineering and architecture such as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the River Dee.

Llangollen is a perfect destination during your boating holiday. From Wrenbury, a round trip can be completed in a week allowing plenty of time for exploring. Start points at Whitchurch, a lovely market town and Whittington are even closer to the Welsh destination. En route you will pass through the picturesque surroundings of Trevor – home of the impressive Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – Blakemere lake and Ellesmere. A truly rejuvenating stretch. At Llangollen itself there is a lot to see and do – several museums, a fully functioning steam railway and, if you arrive in July you might be lucky enough to enjoy the annual International Music Eisteddfod (festival).

Heading north from the Wolverhampton start-point on the Shropshire Union Canal, your route will exhibit the pride of the canal-building age. Wide waterways and many grand bridges grace the path from Wolverhampton up to the Barbridge and Hurleston Juncions, before the rolling hills of western Cheshire surround your route up to Ellesmere Port. Starting eastwards at Middlewich, your route can venture north onto the Trent and Mersey Canal, take a longer cruise towards Llangollen or explore the delights of the ‘Shroppie’.
