About the Area

A brief description of Hickling and Stalham and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

These start-points in the North Norfolk Broads are picturesque, thriving with wildlife and set amongst several National Nature Reserves and the Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes. Short and long cruises bring varied landscapes, historic sites and abundant opportunities for activity stops and leisurely refuelling!

Hickling is the largest of the Norfolk Broads. Covering over 140 hectares, the lake is a haven for sailing, angling and cruising. Nearby is the unique Hickling National Nature Reserve – a must-see for wildlife-lovers and home of the lesser-seen Swallowtail butterfly. From this start point on the River Thurne, you can travel far and wide – south-west to Horning and Wroxham or further still to the historic and exciting city of Norwich. It is also possible to navigate to the coast at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. However long your cruise, within easy reach are wonderful sights such as the legendry low bridge at Potter Heigham, the isolated natural beauty of Martham Broad or the impressive ruins of Benet’s Abbey. Navigate west on the River Bure to approach Horning passing the Ranworth and Malthouse Broads – stop off in Ranworth to climb the spiral of St Helen’s church or take lunch and visit the wildlife centre, then head along to the Broads capital of Wroxham.

Starting at Stalham, the northernmost start-point on the Norfolk Broads, join the River Ant. This leads to the northern peak of the Broads at Honing, where there is an ancient church. However, a short cruise south brings you to the wonderful Barton Broad – the second largest Norfolk Broad and a National Nature Reserve where sailing activities are renowned. The How Hill thatched stately home and the Toad Hole Museum in sight as you meander south – eventually passing Benet’s Abbey and reaching the River Bure and the River Thurne. Longer trips west to Norwich are possible as are seaside ventures to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
