About the Area

A brief description of Forth & Clyde and Union Canals and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

The wide and deep waterways of the Scottish Lowland Canals run from Glasgow to Edinburgh, coast to coast. A boating holiday on these routes will pass by industrial and architectural wonders such as the famous Falkirk Wheel (described as a ‘ferris wheel for boats!) and several impressive bridges including the Almond and Avon Aqueducts. There are ample tranquil stretches in the gentle Lowland countryside, punctuated by friendly pubs, restaurants and the odd pretty village. To the extreme west, Glasgow is a lively city with many galleries and museums, bars, leisure facilities and more. Edinburgh, to the east and towards the stunning Firth of Forth, is one of Scotland’s most historically intriguing and architecturally splendid cities – surrounded by the fabulous scenery of the Scottish Borders.

Falkirk, where your cruise begins, is a historic town with a renowned farmers’ market. The aforementioned Falkirk Wheel is the town’s biggest attraction – built to replace the series of 11 locks that used to connect the Union and Forth and Clyde Canals. Boats are lowered in ‘gondolas’ from the Union canal to the Forth and Clyde – an impressive 115 ft descent.

From here you can chose a leisurely cruise west to Glasgow, on the Forth and Clyde Canal taking in the footprints of industry and the breathtaking Forth of Clyde views. If you venture east, eventually to arrive at Edinburgh, you can pass through picturesque spots such as historic Linlithgow – a delightful lochside town with an impressive Palace, parklands, church and plenty of activity surrounding Linlithgow Loch.
