About the Area

A brief description of Cheshire Ring and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

A boating holiday on the Cheshire Ring and Four Counties Ring can combine some of the most breathtaking countryside panoramas of the Peak District, the Pennines and the Cheshire valleys and gorges, with the intrigue of canal industry dating back hundreds of years. There are also plenty of opportunities to combine quiet stretches with stops at towns, museums, historic sites and welcoming riverside pubs.

The majority of starting points are positioned conveniently between the Cheshire Ring and Four Counties Ring. There are several points on the eastern end of the Welsh Llangollen Canal – Wrenbury, Whitchurch and Whittington – the closest to the dramatic scenery to be found as you venture further across the border into Wales. If you start on the southern stretch of the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton, head up north to reach the famous Macclesfield Silk Museum and Heritage Centre before arriving at the impressive Marple locks. You can venture all the way up to Huddersfield and its canal, a challenging stretch with many interesting features and the rewarding views of the Pennines.

Start your cruise at Middlewich, climb ‘Heartbreak Hill’ to Kidsgrove on the Shropshire Canal to explore the Cheshire or Four Counties Rings, passing through the impressive 3000 yard Harecastle Tunnel. Or, take the Llangollen Canal to venture into stunning Welsh scenery or the Trent and Mersey Canal to begin your trip north on the Cheshire Ring.

In the southern part of the network, you can start on the Trent and Mersey Canal, or the southern reaches of the Shropshire Canal – both positioned on the southern parts of the Four Counties Ring. These reaches bring you into the West Midlands and closer to Stourbridge, Birmingham and Coventry Navigations.
