About the Area
A brief description of Cambridgeshire Waterways and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.
The Cambridgeshire Waterways are renowned for their peace and tranquillity – miles of open meadowland, the UK’s most picturesque riverside cities and towns and welcoming pubs and inns set amongst graceful weeping willows.
You’ll start out at Ely, a gorgeous city famed for its Benedictine cathedral. If you pass through on a Thursday you can stock up at the market, and at any other time there are good shops, pubs and restaurants. The River Ouse takes you south on a relaxing cruise to Wicken Fen, a wonderful stop-off point for nature lovers, then on to join the River Cam. The Cam is a unique experience, winding right into the centre of historic Cambridge. The coty is popular with tourists all year round but retains an air of tranquillity on the riverside. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Midsummer Common, hop out and explore the renowned University buildings, or visit one of the many galleries, museums and markets in the city centre – all within easy walking distance.
Heading west on the Old West River before you reach Cambridge will take you through St Ives, the glorious Godmanchester meadows and on to Huntingdon and St Neots on the Great Ouse River. There are ample places to stop and eat on these peaceful stretches, with some pleasant leg-stretches. On a longer cruise, you can continue on towards Bedford where there are several museums, good pubs and restaurants and a wide range of shops.
