The River Waveney is a serene stretch of waterway in the south of the Norfolk Broads. From Beccles, a delightful market town, a short cruise can take you east to the sea air of Lowestoft passing through Oulton Broad. Further afield, navigate north to join the River Yare that will take you west to fascinating Norwich, with its abundant shops, pubs and bars and offering a wealth of historic attractions – including its impressive castle museum and the imposing cathedral. This route will take you past the Strumpshaw Steam Museum at Brundell and the wildlife-lovers’ haven of the Surlingham Broad Nature Reserve. If you navigate north-east, tranquil Breydon Water awaits, on your way to Great Yarmouth and then north-west on the Bure, Thurne and Ant Rivers to Acle, Wroxham , Hickling and Stalham. There are several Nature Reserves in the north Norfolk Broads, as ever, and plenty of places to stop and explore.

Starting at Oulton Broad you will experience one of the UK’s finest waterway attractions, with watersports, sailing, fishing and all sorts of activities on offer. This area is known as the gateway to the Southern Broads, in an area coined ‘The Sunrise Coast’. Beaches, traditional seaside towns and picturesque estates lie in easy reach. You might chose a shorter cruise, spend some time in the area and then head north on the River Waveney past the impressive Somerleyton Estate and Country Park, then continue your experience of the Broads at Breydon Water – perhaps paying a visit to the Burgh Castle and Roman Fort on your way to Great Yarmouth. Again, it is easy to plan a longer trip to Norwich or the towns of the Northern Broads and bring some contrast to your Norfolk Broads boating holiday.
