About the Area

A brief description of Acle and what you can expect to experience on your river/canalboat holiday.

Within the Broads National Park, the historic market town of Acle on the River Bure, is a picturesque start to a Norfolk Broads boating holiday. The scenery is serene, relaxing breaks are plentiful and moorings easy – leading you immediately through the Bure Marshes Natural Nature Reserve. There are no locks on the Norfolk Broads, making for a truly easy-going experience.

Travelling north, you can follow the Bure to Horning and then the Broads capital of Wroxham – a hive of shops, pubs and restaurants of distinctive character. Forking east on the River Thurne will take you to Potter Heigham. This tranquil village is known as the ‘Gateway to Upper Thurne’ and has an interesting architectural feature in its very low bridge! Well worth the hassle, as the stretches beyond are quite wonderful.

Travelling south from Acle will take you to Breydon Water, on your way to Great Yarmouth. This lovely lake is bursting with wildlife and is a popular spot for birdwatchers. On to the lively resort of Great Yarmouth, from which point you can decide on a well worthwhile venture along the River Yare into the heart of the city of Norwich, heading north west, or to continue south to the Oulton Broad and the stretches of Lowestoft and Beccles.

There are plenty of places to stop and relax, take in some scenery or seek out a good pub, interesting building or characteful community – just take your time!
