Area Guide
What to expect in the area of Santa Cruz De Tenerife and things to do
Santa Cruz is the capital city of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Although not the tourist centre, it is among the most populated city on all the islands with a population of around 250,000. The city is the home of the Canarian Government and other central functions such as a thriving port and various schools of La Laguna University.
Santa Cruz is cosmopolitan and bustling with an array of entertainment, lively ‘ramblas’ and an exciting night-life revolving around the port area - Plaza de Espana. Shoppers will also delight at the range of international and designer goods at low tax prices. Tranquillity is also at hand in the several beautiful parks, such as Park Garcia Sanabria.
Everyday night-life aside, in February and March of each year visitors can witness the splendour of the world famous Tenerife Carnival. This huge event is enjoyed all over the island but is at its peak in the capital.
Unlike the self-catering tourist centres of the south (such as Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos) accommodation in Santa Cruz is largely hotel-based. Due to current development regulations in Tenerife, only the highest class of hotels are being built, adding to an already fantastic range of places to stay. With the TF1 motorway linking Santa Cruz easily to other resorts, the city provides an atmospheric, lively and versatile base to make the most of any stay on the island.
