We visited Gran Canaria last January which is off peak season. The weather was great though and I dont like it too hot anyway. It was about 20-25 degrees round the south of the island.
Maspalomas beach is a huge expanse of sand that looks like the desert. There are some pretty impressive dunes that are great fun to try and scale aswell as many sun loungers for the worshippers. We saw what looked like a camel ride across the dunes but it was closed in January.
We had the dunes pretty much to ourselves for one day of our hols which was brilliant. The sand is fine and the beach to a large extent is very clean, although I can imagine it may be different in high season. Some of the beach is designated a nudist area so be careful not to stray into there if you are easily embarressed!
Just off the beach towards the lighthouse are toilets and a marketplace with several shops. Great fun.
