Area Guide
What to expect in the area of Puerto De La Cruz and things to do
Puerto de la Cruz is situated in the Orotava Valley, on the northern coast of Tenerife. Near to the popular town of La Orotava and only a 25km transfer from the Tenerife North Airport, Puerto is the main tourist resort in the north of the island. Whilst the array of hotels and attractions suggest a hectic tourist population, this former fishing town maintains a great deal of cultural interest in the form of dramatic architecture and breathtaking gardens. It is perhaps a more sophisticated and slower paced alternative to the party-oriented resorts such as Playas de Las Americas. The 30,000 strong tourist population is largely accommodated in high standard hotels, in contrast to the more modern resorts on the south, which largely revolve around self-catered accommodation.
A prime example of the cultural and atmospheric features of this resort is the Lago Martianez – a man-made series of pools which form a quite stunning coastal section. The renowned architect, Cesar Manrique, combined creative design with the lay of the land to create a beautiful area in which all ages can enjoy the coast.
As well as providing relaxed and sunny surroundings throughout the year, due to its mild climate Puerto is hugely popular for a winter getaway. Why not experience the world-famous Carnival of Tenerife (February – March), which takes place all over the island but is most splendid in this city.
